9. Prawn State Byways- Julien Poirier
Ugly Duckling Presse

Julien swung by SPD a few months back to graciously drop off a copy of this beauty/ beast. Prawn State Byways was published by UPD as a pre-release to his brilliant full length El Golpe Chileno; it's filled with little pouches, tiny envelopes, stickers, postcards, posters, a chapbook full of comics, jokes, songs, maps and photos, the DIY treasure of teenage boys. This was very limited, though I heard a rumor this morning that UDP might be reissuing in the near future.

Also, I'm going running in the Concord hills after work so I won't be able to attend, but Julien is reading tonight at Ally Cat Books in SF, along with Garrett Caples and Christina Fisher.

just my firefighter brother rescuing an old dog who got stuck in the mud, I know right, could he get any more cliche...?
"The folks who hate the Google buses are unlikely to be receptive to miniature flying robots cruising their neighborhood, it acknowledged. “We know that gentrification is a hot topic in The Mission and we want to be sensitive to that. … We’ve worked extra hard to make sure our drones are quiet and respectful of the neighborhood. For example, we avoid schools and parks on our flight paths.”

there comes a time in every man's life where he must decide if he's going to continue wearing sneakers (Vans, Chucks, basketball), or if he's going to graduate to man shoes (boots, loafers, chuckas).

I had so much human shit on my boots last weekend.

6. Crossed Vol. 1- Garth Ennis, Jacen Burrows

I really do like reading horror comics before bed. The Last Of The Mohicans is a terrible book. I don't think couples should celebrate anniversaries until they are married.

2. Child-And-Rose- Gennady Aygi
New Directions

I met Gennady after his reading (one of the best I'd ever seen) at the San Francisco International Poetry Festival in 2003 (Unitarian Center).  After the reading, a group of poets, including Gennady and his translator Peter France, headed over to Edinburgh Castle in the Tenderloin for drinks (I lived across the street at the time). I asked Gennady to sign my copy of Child-And-Rose, he signed it in Russian

to John
with fraternal embrace!

I said to Gennady, with Peter France translating for me

"I wish I could speak Russian and that you spoke English"

Gennady replied, again with Peter translating

"Don't worry, we speak through the air"

this was a magical moment for me, I wrote it all down immediately on a napkin from the bar

you'd think Spike Jonze (born 1969) and Steve McQueen (born 1969) would have the couth and moral decency to use their middle names so as not to be confused with, or ride the coattails of Hollywood legends Spike Jonze (born 1911) and Steve McQueen (born 1930)
