Paros!

just got word from Eleni Stecopoulos about the upcoming 4th annual Translator's Symposium on Paros. i'm going to make a huge effort this year to get my ass to Greece. i want to see family and friends in Athens and Pireaus. i'd like to drink retsina with demosthenes. i want to rub exfoliating mud all over my body and take pictures (hello brandon brown). i want to go swimming with poets (it's not something you do often, poets aren't often in bathing suits around each other, it's fun). i want to almost kill myself yet again on a rented vespa. oh man oh man i can't wait.

any greek restaurant in the bay area should have the fried cheese...brandon brown is also a good resource for greek food...or tasty food in general.

i think we ate the most saganaki in nafplio for some reason...that's also where drank the most retsina too...and that's also where we stayed in a dwarf's hotel room...we checked in, the guy was all "boy you guys are tall"...we laughed not thinking anything of it because in fact yes we are taller than most greeks (we're both about 6'5)...he shows us to our room, the ceiling 5 1/2 feet tall!!! we stayed in that awesome little dwarf room for like 4 days...we bashed our heads aplenty..

holy shit, that room was tiny!

and surely, j sakk, I'd defer to you and yours in all matters of greek food.

The hard thing about saganaki is that to make it really good you have to flambe some Greek brandy, and preferably in a really small (cast iron) skillet not much bigger than the cheese...

clay--two words: grilled feta.
