my brother has a fixie. we ride everyday. it's a fad. they don't work in the city. they don't go up hills. people who try and say that "skid stopping" is safer and more controlled than back-brake stopping are deluding themselves. come on now...yeah, they're fun...it's neat to ride around backwards in circles and all that...but then what? unless of course you're a prof. track racer, then, well yeah, fixie's rule!
but yeah, hi todd.
but this arguement is old hat, as a bicyclist you know this.
Yeah, maybe in Frisco fixies are hard to imagine, but in NYC their perfect. That's why messengers have been riding them for years. I've had mine for 11 years (Oh yeah, I use a front safety brake, I'm not totally dumb) and I actually have more control over it in traffic than my road racing bike, which is simply built for speed. I simply feel more connected to it and therefore more in control.
They are indeed trendy...the NY Times did a piece awhile back on all these suit and tie dudes buying them and getting hurt because they didn't even know how to ride them or what it entailed...now that's just stupid.
Sorry to prolong this exchange re: fixies. It was fun though.
i read something recently about how messengers are calling the fixie-newbies "FAM's"...Fake Ass Messengers"! they're like "it's trendy right now, you have these hipsters buying up the fixies...and then getting killed...like, they're getting killed because they want to go out and play around in traffic like us but they have no idea how to ride their bikes..."
don't get me wrong though, i love bombing around on my brother's bike (how your legs feel like an extension of the mechanics of the bike), and i've only almost killed myself on it once, i just don't see the longterm appeal, esp. in hilly california.
so, next time i'm in NYC you should give me a bike tour. yeah?

Oh, no, you haven't seen me on drugs yet. Wait for the pictures I will post on March 26th ...
You need a fixie! Until you've actually had a ride on one you'll never know.
