yesterday and last night
i watched Razor, the new Battlestar Galactica movie...i liked it (because it's new BSG) but didn't like it (because it wasn't really BSG)...watching the commentary it sounded like Ronald Moore wasn't very happy with the final product either...sounded like they had lot's of good ideas that for one reason or the other didn't pan out...the original idea was to intercut the story lines from the first Cylon war to the present (roughly right after Season 2.5)...they didn't do that and instead opted for a much more linear shape...not a good decision.
and then i ate gumbo and nuts and cheese and nutella and peanut butter and an apple...
and then i napped...
and then i woke up and met up with armand on his lunch break, he grabbed a slice from Mythic (gurp...) and i grabbed a beer from Molotov's (yum...)...
Armand went back to work and i went to play records at D-Struc...
drank beers with my brother and Sylvia and listened to Curtis Mayfield at D-Struc...Sylvia asked me and my brother to model (!!!) for some D-Struc fashion show...i said hell yeah...
Roxy came by and we went back to Molotov's...Nicole was there and she told us all about Dave Chapelle's 12am-4:30am set at the Punchline...holy shit, 4:30am?!
i started freaking out in the bar a little bit but Roxy massaged my neck and i felt better...
Emma, James and Tory stopped by and we talked about Hannah Stouffer and her dad...Hannah is great and will be showing at D-Structure as soon as she gets back from Miami...and then i tried to convince Tory to hire me and my brother as HEAT spokespersons...check out HEATISCOOL (Tory's company) on the blogroll...
Roxy and i went back to her place and drank red wine in front of a fire, an actual fire (!!!)...and then Roxy introduced me to 13th Floor Elevators...
now i'm thinking of going to work today...i think Armand is working again so it would be cool to spend the afternoon with him...and now i'm going to smoke a smoke and drink a coffee...
love

yeah, i know what you mean about RAZOR. however, they *did* have the first cylon war involved in the storyline. that was awesome seeing those clips where the cylons looked like the cylons from the original BSG, and their old ships, too.
but, really, overall, this episode was more about giving the fans something while we wait FOR-FUCKING-EVER for the new season to start up.
i liked it. it's a sidenote to the series, though. that's why they released it as a "tv movie".
though they sort of tried to tie it into the upcoming season, with the stuff about starbuck.
and the extras were really good, too. the trailer for season 4 (the FINAL season, which makes me sad) looked like hot shit.
oh! and what about the one-and-only scene where the cyclons actually spoke!!!???
that was fucking RADICAL, man.
fucking radical.
the flashback clips were amazing...i could totally see a spinoff series based on the young Adama (Husker!)...i think it could work...
though my main problem with the flashback scenes with regards to the narrative structure is that they didn't really make sense...i mean, Adama would have a 20 minute flashback in the middle of a sentence with Starbuck, or Lee...it didn't flow very well and BSG is usually hyperaware of continuity and perspective...it was a bit sloppy...also, the fact that so many of the flashbacks were supposed to be intercut concurently with the present day action, and then they weren't, is frustrating...because it would have worked SO much better...the action would have flowed better...ronald moore was saying how the movie was filmed for that kind of story telling device...and then when they decided at the last minute to streamline it, make it more linear those flashback sections didn't really work as well, or at all...
and actually, the episode wasn't really about the fans, it was about the money...it was the DVD/video distribution team that pitched the idea of a BSG movie to Ronald Moore with the understanding that the "movie" would premier on Sci Fi and then be immediately released on DVD/video the next day...for sales...
don't get me wrong, i didn't hate Razor...i was just disapointed that they didn't do more...i'll probably still buy it...
i liked the "starbuck is the harbinger of death" stuff too...a kind of cheap tie-in to season 4 but still, it was cool...
the extras were the shit...and are probably half the reason why i'll buy Razor on DVD...the cast commentary is great and the mini-movie of Husker Adama was really cool...nerd out!
let's get together for some BSG Season 4 TV watching at my place...we can go halvsies on the beer...nerd out redux!
I remember hearing a thing on NPR a few years back (might be available online now?) about the lead singer of 13th Floor Elevators and how he'd gotten really messed upon drugs and wandered and stuff for years and years but finally got clean and healthy and was working on a new album.
Inevitably, when discussing someone who is coming back to recording music, they either show this person, or you hear this person with an acoustic guitar. Somehow adds an earnesty unavailable to those who plug in, I guess.
hey amish,
yeah, roxy was telling me all about him...his name is roky erikson...it was his mother, who was also a bit off, that really let him get out of hand...i think it was his siblings who finally got him back on his meds and then he bagan touring again...
once i fall in love with a program, i'm more prone to forgiveness for its imperfections--i.e., the o.c. season 4 (i still think 3 was a good season!!! and you and no one else can convince me otherwise!!!).
totally down for geeking out and drinking beers at yr place once the fuckin writers' strike ends and BSG can get their final season off its ass.
which reminds me, have you gotten doctor who in yr cue yet? because, really, it would be great if you could watch the first 3 seasons, in, like, the next 4 weeks or so, so that i could also come over and geek out and drink beer to the 4th season of doctor who.
i'm just sayin.
