more illustrations from SSTTITD. this is a children's book. hadn't realized until now that i can probably trace my love of horror to this book. and possibly even my love for books in general. it's certainly one of my earliest book memories. sitting around with my brother and sister reading these stories to each other over and over again. we could only really touch this book in the day time. we would get too nervous at night.
something i didn't know about the books from the Wiki page: "This series is listed as being the most challenged series of books from 1990–1999[2] and seventh most challenged from 2000-2009 [3] by the American Library Association for its religious viewpoint and violence as well as for being occultist, satanic, or inappropriate."
the book was published in 1981.

isn't that photo amazing? those are greek pontic women. in traditional greek pontic dance the men all wear handguns in their holsters on their hip. pontics dude.
and yeah, aren't these drawings scary? i think i sort of suppressed them a bit. because i hadn't thought of them in forever. but once i saw the cover illustration, images of the drawings came flooding back. immediately ordered the 3 book boxed set online. i don't know how i've been going so long without these books in my collection.

yeah, isn't it terrifying? i think the one that stands out the most for me is the rocking chair person in the sky...gets to me.

these books were available in my 3rd grade classes and maybe earlier--at catholic school. so it's interesting it was "challenged" as satanic when my catholic school was making them readily available to us wee ones. i must have gone to a hippie, leftist, liberal catholic school. opa!
I love these so much, the sewer rat picture haunted my dreams for years. I reckon you're right about the love of horror... for me, along with Are You Afraid of the Dark (the Nickelodeon show).
