Michael Koshkin reviews The Moveable Ones...

"This is a fucking great book. I hadn't read anything from John in a while and I was really stricken with poetry boners. The poems have all sorts of nasty edibles and are quite elusive. They make me think of the way Anselm Hollo talks about John Ashbery. The poems almost make you think they are "about" something or contain some sort of meaning, but really there is refreshingly no reasonable logic. Relationships between words and events and I don't know what the fuck is going on. I'm not missing anything am I? Is this about some Greek war or something? I hope not, if so I apologize"

"By far, the easiest way to befriend a large group of white people is to organize and then participate in a game that is normally played by children."

--Stuff White People Like

to our credit though, i'd say only half of us were white...the other half blacks and browns...no asians though. definitely childish. mixed with adult drinks.

Kelsey picked an incredible team...we killed Graham's team...i think the final score was 17 to 6...and then it got dark...and we got drunk...

Cat says my brother won MVP...he was on the loosing team...

so, me and Kelsey and Steve H. and Danny and Jesse and Sarah and Dempsey and a few other i'm blanking on ruled the field, made some incredible plays, ran the bases, drank the beers...

and then Cat and Graham and James and Sondra and Kaz and a few others i'm blanking on got killed...made some incredible errors, tripped over the bases, got their beers stolen...but my brother still wins MVP, yeah right...

i liked Steve H.'s offense...running the bases with a lit cigarette, thrusting red hot cherry at infield faces rounding the bags...worked well for us...

i liked James's defense...chest butting the ball instead of catching it playing center field not dropping his beer making the out...oh yeah, THAT's why Cat says James is MVP...

and then Sparks and beers and night time and warmth and we're in t-shirts at Dolores Park in the dark and we're not cold and we're talking about The Flight Of The Navigator and bikes and thai boxing and skating and cholos and female ejaculation and The Peanut Butter Solution and Sweet Child Of Mine and soccer and Peruvian beers and raver beads and boners and The Explorers and baseball and lesbians and then Sylvia showed up and we talked about "pile driving as means of love" and i picked up Sondra and threw her over my shoulder and said "like this..." and then she got on Danny's bike and they rolled down the hill and bailed and then i picked Cat up and threw her over my shoulder and James and i got up to go pee at the same time and i had to fight him for a certain tree and i won and then me and Kaz and James and Sylvia and Steve H. and Jesse and some other walked back to the Lower Haight on the way to Waizema's but me and James just went home...i ate quesadilla and watched Queer As Folk Season 5 and went to bed...

with regard to me questioning James's MVP award he writes "I don't really think you get a say in the matter.

By the way, you get the mvp of tackle tree pissing."

i can get with that...

this morning i got a bunch of text's saying things like "great night...great crew..."
"hump..." "the presidential debate at 6" "yes, yes, oh yes..." "check your myspace" "ready when u r" "no" "tonite was soooo sweet..." "translation: us still think i'm cool?" "yannimo! ha!" "ha!" "

so yeah, tonight pres debate at my place with friends and wine...

Mainstreet! maINsTREET! MAINSTREET!

"what's 'Main Street's!' Master Of Puppets?

McCain said he wanted to discuss "how we can make sure that the American people regain confidence on Main Street! so that they can regain their confidence in Main Street! and in Main Street!."

"We need to help people cope with rising gas and Main Street!, spark job creation by repairing our Main Street's! and our roads, help states avoid painful budget cuts and tax increases, and help homeowners stay in their Main Street's!," said the Illinois senator. "And we must also ensure that the solution we design doesn't reward particular Main Street!, or irresponsible borrowers or lenders, or CEOs, some of whom helped cause this Main Street!."

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama on Friday called for an economic plan for Main Street!, saying, "We cannot only have a plan for Wall Street..."We must also help Main Street!," he said.

but but...but hey, she has a family just like me! or, the "Main Street" proxy...

"Later, the campaign only slightly offset negative coverage of the imbroglio by sending reporters an email promising “a little color for background use from today.” The details – that Palin’s husband Todd took their three youngest children to snap pictures of the Statue of Liberty, to Ground Zero and to F.A.O. Schwartz, where their 7-year old daughter Piper “enjoyed trying on some princess dresses” – were featured far less prominently in most news reports story than the standoff with reporters and descriptions of her thin foreign policy credentials."

"Footage captured the Palins being greeted by cheering supporters and mingling with customers without the uncomfortable presence of reporters shouting questions at Palin. The campaign later sent them an email detailing the flavors of ice cream each ordered.

“Piper had Oreo Overload. Willow (14) had Birthday Cake Mix (sic). Todd had chocolate with peanut butter. Gov. Palin also had Birthday Cake Mix (sic).”

The flavors did not appear in many accounts of the Palins trip to Florida."

off to Portland...

for the PNBA

be back on Thursday!

Sep 12, 2008

there's this new thing happening...

in my neighborhood where all the cafes/restaurants with outdoor seating are now selling $2 beers...or in the case of the originator, Bean Bag, $1.90 beers...and good beers...Anchor, Big Daddy, Stella et al.

on any given day of the week, Divisadero, say between Grove all the way up to Page, is teeming with folks drinking beers, eating foods, hanging out in groups, flirting, reading, killing time before a show at The Independent, talking...it's a great thing, it's kind of a new thing, it's a slightly foreign thing (right? it does feel a little "East Coast" (or Austin, TX) or something right?))...i mean, young people packing street corners in the early evening drinking beers on the sidewalk out of plastic cups, next to the bus stop, crowding in on each other but in a friendly "can you believe how cheap the beers are?" kind of way isn't exactly a common sight in foggy SF...and especially during last week's heat wave, it was a beautiful thing, beautiful girls in beautiful summer dresses out in droves, boys in shorts and tank tops enjoying the warm evening, everybody feeling sweaty and sexy, the whole block was in heat...it didn't feel like Summer in SF, not even Indian Summer in SF...felt like what it must feel like all the time in summer'y, balmy NYC, jealous...$2 beers bring out the best in people...

anyway, a group of us: me, James, Dempsey, Steve, Jesse, Brittany have been meeting up at Bean Bag every Thursday after work...we usually sit outside (or stand if no seating) and get stupid until we're too stupid or the kegs run out (usually when there's a show across the street at The Independent)...all of this is leading no where really...i'm just saying, i'm really liking this $2 beer trend happening in the Western Addition/NoPA/Lower Haight...it's a great thing to walk two blocks and be in the midst an after work party, every day...

oh i almost forgot...my buddy Dempsey didn't want to sell his truck, and i guess it was in such bad shape that it wasn't worth trying to fix, so he decided to rig it with homemade explosives and detonate it with a sniper riffle...awesome huh? but now he's worried about The Patriot Act...

and then i went home and watched Creepshow and ate sandwiches and went to bed...

tonight Cat and i will be heading to CCA for the premier of "Geyser! a new play by Kevin Killian & Wayne Smith" at Small Press Traffic...and then possibly The Castle to visit with Matthew and Kelsey...or maybe Sadie's with poets post-play...or maybe neither or both.

currently really really enjoying this song by Panda Bear

watched last night...

but i thought the point was to get people to ride...

"BART is considering charging higher fares and parking fees during rush hour to head off train and station overcrowding that is worsening as more riders flock to public transportation to avoid high gas prices."

—from today CC Times

consumption...

yesterday i worked a half day because i'm sick...

went home and got in bed and read a lot...

here's what i read:

Double Impact- Michael Price and Kevin Opstedal

i have a couple Kevin chapbooks, i think they both have palm trees on the cover, i think i bought these at Moe's in Berkeley when i was 19...Moe's used to be a great place to find copies of Mike & Dale's and Gas and Skanky Possum...i remember i bought the "movie ticket stub" issue of Mike & Dale's the same day i found a 1st (only?) edition copy of Kenneth Koch and Alex Katz's Interlocking Lives...i remember bringing Interlocking Lives to the counter and the guy saying "where the hell did you find this?"...i remember that guy at the counter was wearing black rimmed glasses and a San Francisco Demons t-shirt (XFL League)...i remember thinking "he's wearing that ironically"...i was a kid and i wanted to be as cool as that guy...i remember my friend Elli bought a Kandinsky coffee table book...Michael Price gave me my copy of Double Impact when me and Steve D. visited his Pearl Street Mall furniture store Weird Horse (?)...i have a photo (update: found the photo) of Michael Price and Steve Dickison standing outside the Boulderado Hotel...Michael has on a cool cowboy shirt, Steve D. looks warm...Kevin Opstedal read at Books & Bookshelves a couple weeks ago...

Interdiction- Michael Slosek

Michael just left SF for Chicago...he does House Press...Noah Eli Gordon recently mentioned House Press as one of his favorite chapbook presses in Rain Taxi...i read once with NEG in Boulder, CO...NEG said my work was very early Michael Palmer...Joseph Lease called me yesterday and said (in a scary voice) "you're the only person in the world that thinks i look like NEG..." we laughed...Michael used to work for UC Press...Logan Ryan Smith has Michael's old job...Logan Ryan Smith publishes Transmission chapbooks...Interdiction is a Transmission chapbook...NEG and Logan Ryan Smith once drank vodka tonics together at The Catacombs...The Catacombs was where i wrote my thesis on Michael Palmer and The Analytic Lyric...

The Ancient Rain: Poems 1956-1978- Bob Kaufman

i bought this book at City Lights when i was 22 years old with my girlfriend on our 2 year anniversary...my friend Adam Venter said that Kaufman was his favorite Beat poet...i hadn't heard of him before...Adam let me borrow Cranial Guitar which i never read...at City Lights i saw The Ancient Rain and thought of Adam...i bought the book and my girlfriend bought Jimmy Corrigan...we stayed at The Argent that night and ate at what we thought was a rustic Italian restaurant called Buca Di Beppo's...

Japan- Maxine Chernoff

this was one of the first "experimental" books of poetry i ever bought...i got this when i was 18...my mom used to take me to SPD once a year where she would give me around 100 bucks to buy whatever i wanted...i remember her saying once "are you SUUURE you want this Ward Churchill book?"...the nice, incredibly intimidating people at SPD invited me to walk around the warehouse...i found the damaged shelf...i found Japan on the damaged shelf with a bright orange sticker...i opened it up and and read a few lines and put it in my Green Apple tote bag...Japan is an alphabet poem but that wouldn't have meant much to me at the time...i remember the first time i met Maxine at SFSU i saw a few copies of Japan in her office...i thought "so...that's you...weird"...a few years later i wouldn't have graduated SFSU without Maxine hooking me up with credits...when i think of Japan i think of almost not graduating...

Any Time Now- Frances Jaffer

i won SFSU's Frances Jaffer award in 2002...Mark Linenthal came to the awards reading and gave me a few of Frances's books...Rob Halpern is working on a big Frances Jaffer book to be published by i forget...in 2008 Rob invited me to read at a series he curates in the Mission...he told me that i would be reading with Mark Linenthal...Frances Jaffer was Mark's wife...i told Rob all about the Frances Jaffer award and how Mark had come to my reading and given me some of Frances's books...Rob was like "whoa...i didn't know that..."...and then at the reading when i was introduced to Mark again, 6 years later, Mark said to me "you won the Frances Jaffer award!!!...Frances is watching over our reading..."...Rob is reading tonight at Books & Bookshelves...

after i read all these books i started Samuel Johnson's Lives Of The Poets (Congreve to Grey)...and then i ate a bowl of chili and some garlic bread and a packet of Oreo's...and then later some tuna-salad and peanut butter and banana and trail mix...

and then i watched An Inconvenient Truth and went to bed at 9:15pm...

...

if Independent WHITE WOMEN send John McCain to the White House because of a sadly misdirected chromosomal identification with Sarah "let's ban books" Palin i may never vote again (i've been voting local/state/national since 18)...sadly, i think i'm serious. i will lose all faith in our Democratic process...if David Copperfield'ish smoke and mirrors can decide an election, i'll cease to see the point of it all. if American's are this stupid, yeah, what's the point? like Clay said, it's like a WWF gimmick...what if McCain wins on a "tag-team" gimmick?

last night i dreamt that i was in LA hanging out with Stan Apps and Joseph Mosconi...the POETIC RESEARCH BUREAU was a giant convention of meth addicts...

i was chatting with Stan when this "bull dyke" in a mesh hat said "you're sitting in my chair..." i looked to Stan and Joseph who were kind of smirking...i said "but i know Stan and Joseph..."

i got up...

weekend...

Friday a list:

skateboards, the TL, sweat, rent, Azikiwee, stoops, Bevmo, Japan, shower, jeans, photographer, Yosemite, DUCKS Opening, Tamsyn, sushi, loft, "this party is very San Jose...", Anchor, Jon Molotov's, Cat parallel parking, box of wines, tape players, Lionel Richie 415 Pierce St.

segue to stream paragraph

Cat belongs to a wine club where they send her a box of 3 wines per month not a "box of wine" but an actual box with three different "selected" wine bottles so she brought that box into my apartment and we cracked it open and she chose a bottle of Sirrah that we thought was bad at first but after 3 glasses we couldn't tell anymore and me and Cat and Jon who looked amazing in his tank top mashed to the living room and by this time it's probably 12:45am so it's kind of early for a Friday night and i put on a record and then we're all really excitable and swerved at this point because we've been drinking beers and wine and vodka tonics and stuff so Jon grabs a record and throws it on and i'm like "let's go 'one for one'" so now were alternating turns every record and both of us are prefacing all the songs we're playing but it's all very subjective on my side and very objective on Jon's side and Cat isn't looking bored at all which is really a bit surprising because me and Jon can get carried away but it's turning me on until somehow we get to talking about Jon's old dreadlocks and out of nowhere he says "you wanna see them?" and i'm like "you still have your hair?" and he says yes and goes to his bedroom and brings out a ziplock bag full of dreadlocks and now i want to puke but Cat grabs them and Jon is like "smell them" and Cat god bless her does and she says "smells like Nag Champa" which is perfect but i say "get those nasty fuckers out of here..." and it's just very sweaty out in SF which is so rare so there's this vibe in the air not even just in my apartment but in the air outside my window so Jon rolls a spliff and i'm not smoking cause whenever i smoke i just want to read Daniel Clowes books and hide under the covers but i'm still drinking red wine and smoking too many Export A's and playing records and Jon puts on some great EB40 record and were all in amazement at how amazing it is so i put on Devo's That's Good and i tell them to call me "Corey Webster" and i'm singing my head off and then some Funky Green Dogs and then some dirty ass I Am Spoonbender and now we're all feeling pretty dancy and Jon throws on an original pressing of New Order's Temptation which just totally freaks us the fuck out and i ask to borrow it for the next time i play out and Jon say "no way, sorry dude..." and Jon is dancing like a maniac so i get up and turn up the stereo and my apartment is full of smoke and sweat and this really Summer'y vibe and now me and Jon are dancing around getting all wild and smiles and so i grab Cat and now the three of us are dancing in the middle of my living room really hard and goofy and we're all singing along really loud and then the song ends and i go to the turntable and start the track over again and we listen to it all over again and by now a few hours have passed and it's about 3:30am and i shut the windows and we leave Jon in the living room surrounded by records and bottles of wine and beer and sweat and ash trays and spliffs and me and Cat turn in with the window open and it's still warm outside

Saturday a list:

heat, East Bay, Spiro, figs and honey dew, mom, dad, tank tops, newspaper, Penske, Monument Blvd., hangover

and then i was moving my sister's bookshelf in the Penske truck and i smashed my forehead into the base of it gashing my skull pretty bad and i'm really sweaty and the wound is pretty deep so the sweat and blood is mixing and i'm kind of dizzy and i look scary in my tank top with a bloody face walking around my sister's Walnut Creek apartment complex so i take a picture all "ouch" and i probably should have gotten stitches but i was in the middle of a marathon East Bay heat wave move so it's definitely going to scar but whatever we had to finish moving my sister's crapola (hi Dim!)...and then 4 1/2 hours later in 105 heat we're finally done and we head to my parent's house where my mom has a huge reward meal waiting for me and Spiro which consists of: souvlaki, bbq'd eggplant, steak, garlic bread, beers, Greek salad, fried Greek potatoes and fruit...me and Spiro gorge and drive back to The City listening to Metallica's Ride The Lightening...

that night i layed down and then hit the wall...drank some beers, watched some Queer As Folk, Cat came over around 1:15am but i passed out like 5 minutes before she got there...i woke up all confused at 1:55am, didn't know what day it was, didn't know what time it was, didn't really know where i was, checked my phone, 1 missed call, 2 txt messages, 1 voicemail...shit. check the messages, all from Cat like "hey i'm on your stoop come get me..." "hey, where are you?" "hey, you probably passed out, i'm going home"...called her back, apologized profusely...she accepted for some reason...went to bed feeling like a douchbag. woke up feeling like a douchbag, called Cat...

Sunday:

feeling sick as i'm drinking my coffee as i'm talking to Cat on the phone on my stoop but feeling sick as in snotty and not "fresh" or "vomity" so we make plans to meet up in Dolores and bum around all day...but before that i eat lunch and steadily feel sicker and now i'm sinking into the couch watching a Bizarre Foods w/ Andrew Zimmern marathon...and i love Andrew because he's this fat lovable culturally insensitive schlub who's favorite outfit seems to be a yellow windbreaker and white short shorts and he reminds me of the cliche American tourist which is actually not true but Zimmern really embodies it well...so then i get a call from Cat and she sounds sad and she says that she just got called into work for some last second emergency project reevaluation...she's an interior designer, but i guess this means that sometimes she gets called in on weekends and this Sunday was one of those days so she heads to work and i'm a little bummed but maybe it's for the best anyway because i'm feeling like ass so i eat lot's of Rice Crispy Treats and cheese slices and watch Zimmern drink blood and eat insects and rotting shark meat and whale blubber and then Cat comes over and it's probably 8pm and she just got off work and is exhausted so we watch some Six Feet Under and pass out...

and today i'm feeling a bit better but still snotty and this is the second cold i've had this Summer and for a person who usually gets sick once a year over Christmas break it's a bit excessive...
