Mueller gets ups!!!

if you're aware of my editor's mission statement published in the first issue of BOTH BOTH then this email from Daron Mueller of the Left Hand Reading series will make sense...

Hi John -- Daron here -- how are things?? I hope very well. I had
been
meaning to send this Shakespeare to you for some time (IF YOU HADN"T
ALREADY FOUND IT) -- I happened to be reading the Tempest right when
BOTH BOTH came out. Just a few minutes ago I realized that I could use
the MIT Shakespeare website and cut and paste the text to you -- there
maybe other "both both"s in Shakespeare and I suppose one could search
all text of all the plays with a "find" command and type in the text
"both".

fun fun!
d

here is the Shakespeare from the Tempest Act I, Scene 2
the MIT SHAKESPEARE site:

*MIRANDA*

O the heavens!
What foul play had we, that we came from thence?
Or blessed was't we did?

*PROSPERO*

Both, both, my girl:
By foul play, as thou say'st, were we heaved thence,
But blessedly holp hither.

*MIRANDA*

O, my heart bleeds
To think o' the teen that I have turn'd you to,
Which is from my remembrance! Please you, farther.

...thanks Daron!

Etel Adnan sent me a copy of Discourse Journal For Theoretical Studies In Media Culture from Winter/ Spring 98'...her essay "The Unfolding Of An Artist's Book" is included...in her words (from her letter) the essay is "a probably interesting oblique view on translation, as it includes another form of expression, painting." (thanks Etel!)

darg, i miss Armand...

"well well well, it appears as tho, you were up plenty late last night and ya know Logan, I could have really used your help last night in the TENDERLOIN. It appears, that at roughly 2am, a beer bottle went sailing out of Arnone's apartment towards a mob of about 20 hipsters outside the Castle. A few moments later, I found myself inside of the gate screamiing at a mob that now had grown to roughly 40 hipsters all wanting to rip me apart while Katie with a K, Orth and Pokarney desperatley tried to prevent me from entering the street and most likely my death. The scene outside, was truly something to be seen, like a choreographed Hipster-Thriller, or a scene from Thunderdome. Not only was I told to "go back to Fresno, you Yuppie-Fuck" whereupon I began a riveting monologue about how I was from Chicago, but I was also called a certain outdated term usually directed at an African American, which provoked me to start pointing my finger at the angry mob, counting them and screaming "Honkey". Eventually, a Budweiser "Big Boy" went sailing through the gate, towards me, fell on the ground, whereupon, Orth being incredibly aware, picked it up and screamed "Free Beer!", picked it up and then began thanking them by saying "Thanks for the free beer dude!....I love free beer!" Somehow this ended, we came back up stairs, I took a few sips of my "Big Guy" and then promptly took a power nap in the chair.

"Oh....thats our Armand" said Arnone."

...BTW, the apartment from whence the beer bottle was chucked is none other than my old apartment...Geary between Polk and Larkin foo'...glad to see, read, hear that the old TL apartment is still as ruckus as ever...and that Armand "cappo" C. is still the homie...

also, had a dream last night that i was performing with Brandon Brown and Alli Warren's super group Bound To Get Fuller at the San Francisco Poet's Theater...Brandon was sort of yelling surrealistic nothings into a microphone all the while Alli was looking embarrassed all the while i was beat boxing...people didn't seem to be into us...they looked really bored...

...currently listening to a Michael Palmer lecture...

back at work...

so, didn't leave the apartment all weekend, didn't answer the phone (ironically this seemed to be the weekend EVERYTHING was going on), drank approximatly 25 cups of "yogi herbal tea," and two gallons of "Simply Orange" orange juice concomitant with mounds and mounds of fruit...if fact the first "real" meal i had in three days was a bowl of chili yesterday afternoon (i think i lost 10 pounds this weekend, no joke, i had NO appetite)...prologue to that it was all fuji apples, bananas, cantalope and canned pinapple...

movies watched this weekend:

1. Sin City (#1 comic book movie ever...Batman Begins #2)
2. Gandhi (wow! this movie! i had no idea...)
3. American Me
4. Coming To America
5. The Shining

American Me struck me most (i hadn't seen it since middle school)...watching the "making of" and learning that more than half of the cast were actual gang members/ Folsom prisoners...and then learning that a lot of the actors/gang members in the movie were killed/maimed shortly after the film wrapped...not because of the film, but just because...

got sick of taking NyQuil so i did some meds digging and found some old prescription cold pills...currently taking those...though i'm holding off on the Amoxycillin until i know this head cold is a sinus infection...we'll see...

currently in my office listening to Drew Gardner reading at Segue in New York (http://media.sas.upenn.edu/pennsound/authors/Gardner/Gardner-Drew_Segue_NY_11-5-05.mp3), thanks for the link Kaplan! waiting for Ann (librarian) to bring me a box of new audio tapes to dig into and start digitizing...

so, TOTALLY not well...in fact, full blown cold...which blows...

so, Michael Koshkin and Jennifer Rogers, i probably won't be at your reading tonight at Left Hand (8 PM for the Boulder folks)...we'll see how i feel...

...i think i'm going to get dressed, go to Safeway, buy a gallon of orange juice, tea, some more cold medicine and Kleenex, go to the Writing and Poetics office and pick up mail, come home and watch movies all day...

why is the germaphobe always the one to catch the cold?

Gennady Aygi...(from Joris' blog)

Gennady Aygi is the major Chuvash poet of our times, now in his early seventies & in need of help because of failing health. The email below from PEN Berlin was forwarded to me by Ammiel Alcalay. Your help will be much appreciated. Below the appeal I'll paste two small texts by & a bio-note on Aygi I put together a few years back for a special issue on poetics of Boundary2.

Please help the poet Gennadji Ajgi in Moscow!

Gennadij Ajgi born in 1934 in Schajmursino (at the time part of the Autonomous Chuvash Soviet Republic), is a great European Poet. The Chuvashian lyricist has been writing since 1960 in the Russian language (following the advice of Boris Pasternak) and has received a numerous amount of awards amongst others the German Petraca price and the price of the Académie Française. In 1992/93 Ajgi was fellow in Berlin as part of the artists program of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). During this time period he published “Aus Feldern Russland“ (From Russian Fields) together with his translator Felix Philipp Ingold and has enchanted many listeners and readers.

We have received a cry for help from Moscow. Gennagij Ajgi who recently accepted to take part at the P.E.N. congress in Berlin in May has fallen ill and lies in a Moscow clinic. The hospital costs are large and exceed the modest amount covered by the families insurance. P.E.N. in Germany has set up a donation account to help Ajgis family with the hospital bill.

Commerzbank of Darmstadt; Germany
IBAN: DE 3750 8400 050 - 130808907
BIC: COBADEFFXXX

Please help with a donation and please help soon. The reserve assets and donations of his friends and family in Moscow have already been used. Every Euro Counts! Please pass this call for help to your friends and family.

(...this is terrible news...Gennady's reading at The Poetry Center @ SFSU stands as one of the three best readings i've ever attended...and he read last (after a 3 1/2 hour marathon of international poets!)...i was lucky enough to have drinks with Gennady and his translator Peter France at a local pub in the Tenderloin after the reading...Peter kindly translating my English for Gennady, vise versa...

soup...

at work on another Kyger tape (continued from last Monday)...

"the Latin Poet's are Cambells' Soup" —Philip Whalen (from a list given to Kyger on "what books to read")...seems like the males in Kyger's life were always giving her lists...a few tapes back Kyger read a list of "things you should be doing" written by Snyder to Kyger back in the late 60's early 70's...

right now, Kyger is playing a recording of Philip Whalen reading his poem "Self Portrait Sad"...

the no drink, no smoke stricture was going well until (not a complaint) fiction writer Adam Barker stopped by the apartment last night with a huge bottle of Shiraz in tow...we drank, we smoked we watched Arrested Development...then i started feeling sick...then i poured out the rest of my wine and went to bed...then i woke up at 3 AM on what felt like my deathbed...sweaty, achy, delusional, snotty, coughy etc...back to bed until i woke up again at 8:30 AM feeling refreshed, dewy, non snotty, non coughy and lucid!!!...it was one of those over night battles...some unknown germ VS. my immune system...i must say, my immune system whooped that ass...go t-cells!...i seem to get these a lot...like, my body is teetering on either being REALLY sick or flash-flood sick...my immune system (it really does rock) usually tips the scales to the latter with the cellular blitzkrieg...i'm a healthy boy!

...currenttly listening Kyger listening to a recording of Philip Whalen reading his poem "Dream Pantomime"

Jan 25, 2006

ouch...

i think i've been going too hard for the last 6 days or so...smoking WAY, drinking WAY, shit talking WAY...my body aches, my spirit is drained, my constitution flushed, i'm not sick but i have a cough...i haven't had a drink since monday, i haven't had a smoke since 6 PM yesterday...i don't plan on doing either until my chest feels better...

thank God Alicia is coming to Boulder to keep me company for a few days...gotta stay healthy for A-dub...

played catch with Jared Hayes (look for new work from Hayes in the upcoming issue Five Fingers Review!) today on the Naropa greens...always fun playing with a former minor league (single A) prospect..."nice throw" takes on a whole new meaning...

people always tell me i'm "such a sag"...like i know what that means...

what else? oh, i ate "Poet's Tuna Salad" today...yum yum yum...i'm out of fruit but am a little too paranoid to leave the apartment at the moment to buy more...which is sort of a Catch-22...if i don't eat fruit my body and mind sort of tag-team and go a little crazy...psycho-somatic reactions ain't fun bub...

has everyone checked the new Hot Whiskey chapbook? it's called...something...and is by Anselm Palatore...they're really pretty, you should buy one...Jared (da' catcher) Hayes helped design the cover...

Sun...

a poem that i love from Michael Palmer's Baudelaire Series (which i read today)

I killed a bee on the Street of Scissors
The bee was holding a picture of me

A woman walked past
There is a time, there

is a time before, she said
without turning her head

Then you carried no ink
Then you were not a photograph

...somehow i feel implicated from the opening couplet's first person to the concluding couplet's second person...a sort of murky transition...the duration of the book/poem reads this way...not sure whom/what is speaking/progressing (I/ She/ You?)...thinking back to Palmer's sense of the 'margin,' of the 'theater'..."Because I'm writing about the snow not the sentence/ Because there is a card—a visitor's card—and on that card// there are words of ours arranged in a row" (from Fifth Prose)

...today i transcribed Demosthenes Agrafiotos' Greek translations of a couple Rachel Blau DuPlessis poems that are going in Bombay Gin #32...

Law & Order SVU is on tonight...i'm watching that then going to bed...boom...

choose your own adventure...or, an X-File...

so, how is it that one goes to the bar to study for thesis and ends up sitting with the ex-boyfriend of a girl who one was hooking up with a bit last summer while she was still with said ex-boyfriend (though to my (eh hem...one's)) credit the girl said she was in an open relationship???

OMG! talk about awkward at first...but dood turned out to be a really cool (AND UNDERSTANDING) guy...and i think once we both got over the the weirdness it was all gravy...actually, i had a great time shooting the breeze with him...lot's about Ken Miller (Naropa photo Prof. who is known for his amazing portraits of my old neighborhood in SF, the Tenderloin), corn shucking/ apple picking in the Pacific Northwest, and sports (imagine that! a theater major and a poet sitting in a bar getting excited about Kobe's 82 points, the UT game and the Super Bowl)

...speaking of sport's though, Barry Bonds dropped out of the WBC! which is bad news for Team USA but good news for my SF Giants...stay healthy Barry!

just for the record...Bowen family...Sabrina Calle does not have really big blonde Bon Jovi hair...not that there's anything wrong with that...

i got a lot done tonight...about 10 pages of notes from the Hollander/ Levi-Strauss/ Palmer interview...i'm thinking that the Catacombs might be my study hall (no, not like Spicer)...the analytic lyric haven i've been yearning for...hmmm....

and i wrote three poems!!!

after Michael Palmer

Form A

"called hazards of bodies"

the gaze true or false
well, no flood of blood
be (prey) dead gift
when having a birthday

under the name

Form A

"called hazards of bodies"

or to thumb jouissance
starts bleeding
yet a closed grotesque
Greek, judge and brutes

memory on dance
Jesperson has that too

Form A

"called hazards of bodies"

at each end ark
dinner for me/ easily
and discretion of a bear, let's say
everytime I saw red

(and then those So. Korean kids are nuts for first person shooters)...Dateline was much better (wha?)...AND my Sunday burger was the beat!

about to start work on another Kyger tape...all about Philip Whalen...

working...

on a lecture given by Jenny Penberthy at Naropa July 4, 1995 on Niedecker and Surrealism...

i remember Penberthy giving a similar lecture for The Poetry Center @ SFSU a few years back...the Oppen Lecture perhaps? (where Penberthy played the only known recording of Niedecker reading her poems...amazing!)

lot's about N.'s "Vertical Simultaneity," her experiment of putting three poems on the page together to "catch the intersections of consciousness and unconsciousness," with regards to her primary "basic color, sound, and rhythm" poetics...

and then lot's about N.'s "the subconscious and folk" poetics as applied to her New Goose poems...as Penberthy explains, "the deeply embeded rhythms of our childhood as explored in the poems.."

Steve Dickison recently (couple years ago) published the New Goose poems in a beautiful little edition from his Listening Chamber press...pretty sure they're still available from SPD...

Plummer's playing like crap...(pun...boo)...

ugh...Steelers lead the Broncos 24-3...two touchdowns in 1:48 seconds the latter coming off a pick interception...boo...this is almost to painful to watch...how come the Steelers aren't bothered by the altitude? where the hell are the bloody noses, the dehydration, headaches etc...?

in lieu of more football commentary i'll give you my "Poet's Tuna Salad" recipe...this is what i live off of...

one can of Kirkland Tuna (this is important, Kirkland has the desired quantity and texture)
three generous spoon size scoops of Safeway Select Mayo (integral, the Safeway brand has just the right combo of a salty to sweet flavoring...never, i repeat NEVER use Miracle Whip...unless you want to end up with "Poet's Garbage Tuna Salad"...

ratio of minced or chopped or sliced onions based on desired "pep"...i like a lot of pep so i tend to use a lot of onions...

1/2 a fuji apple chopped into small cubes (fuji is important, perfect sweetness to counter/compliment the onions)

one handfull of Trader Joe's Honey Roasted Peanuts (not so sure that the Trader Joe's brand is so important...i use them because my mom usually sends around 5 bags in her care packages...)

ton o' pepper...i mean TON O'...generous seasoning with salt...i say GENEROUS people...

mix diligently together until texture looks like patte...

eat either out of the bowl or wrapped in letuce while watching The X-Files or a sport's game on the tele...enjoy! kaliorixi!!!

Bon Jovi Plane Skids Off Runway in Canada
01/21/2006 4:41 PM

An airliner carrying members of Bon Jovi skidded off a runway early Saturday after landing in severe weather.

The Boeing 707 carrying the band and its touring staff overshot the runway at Hamilton International Airport.

A spokeswoman said the 14 passengers and flight crew were arriving from Buffalo, N.Y., where the band played Friday. No one was hurt.

Shows scheduled for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday at Toronto's Air Canada Center were expected to proceed as planned, she said.

Brazil...

"just got in yesterday from brazil. i miss the heat. i miss always sweating. i miss the beaches. i especially miss all the sounds...how brazil creeps into your ears in the mornings."— my brother

...dream: i was a woman. i was in China. i was in a bicycle race with thousands of other men and women. we seemed to be racing downhill through sand dunes toward the beach. it was imperative to keep to a certain side of the road. thousands of bicyclists yelling at each other "do you know if it's left or right!" it was understood that the Chinese Government was forcing us to race. it was also understood that the Chinese Government would be executing people depending on how they did in the race. i reached the beach/ water first ostensibly winning the race. i called the Chinese Government to let them know i won and to claim my prize (my life?). the Chinese Government told me that because i had cheated by sitting down on the bicycle seat during the race they were coming to "collect" me. i knew i hadn't cheated by sitting down. for some reason i knew this rule and made sure during the race not to break it. i violently spat as many combinations of curses i could think of into the phone at the Chinese Government (i knew this was a MAJOR coup, like the collected "i" of the racers was being voiced). i knew i only had a few minutes before the "van" showed up to collect me. i found a pool cue on the beach. i quickly broke it in half. i quickly hid one half of the sticks in the cast on my left arm. then i quickly concealed the other half in my right breast plate (suddenly i was wearing women's midieval armor). i was being transported in the van with a group of other "collected" bicyclists. i saw an opertunity. (at this point the dream sort of took a narrative turn, as if i was telling myself what myself just did without actually experiencing what i just did). i slid the stick from my cast arm and thrust it into the face of one of the Government guards sitting in the back seat. i then took the stick from my breast plate and impaled the Government guard sitting in the front seat. i quickly took the gun from the Government guard sitting in the back seat and directed the Guard-driver, at gunpoint to take me somewhere safe. (at this point it's hard to make a narrative/ connection to the next part of the dream). suddenly my consciousness split. i was both a young African-American woman and myself (as John). we were married? boyfriend/girlfriend/ not sure. the "van" broke down in what seemed to me like the American Deep South (weeping willow trees, hills). we pulled into a grocery store parking lot. everything seemed a bit menacing. i remember seeing members of the community wading around in a kiddie pool in the middle of the parking lot. i remember i thought this was strange and went back to the "van" to get my digital camera. i remember kneeling down in the parking lot and snapping a picture of an old man with a white beard in a brown suit sliding into the water. myself (the African-American woman and John) got back into the van.

...i woke up and wrote it down.

...in the midst of a Living Legends saturation job if you haven't noticed (it's not my fault though, i'm a wee OCD, like the only reason for the LL glut at the moment is because i'm on the "l's" of an alphabetical "by artist" complete itunes listening session, before the "by artist" it was alphabetical "by song title," i have 7000 songs in my itunes so it takes about half a year to do a complete listening session (a through z), after i'm done with the current "by artist" i'll move on to an alphbetical "by albums" listening session, and after that i'll be doing a "by genre" listening session, i'm better than i used to be though, i used to have to listen to a new cd wherever it was naturally located within an alphabetical order, for example, say i get a new Themselves album but i'm only on the g's (Gavin Hardkiss for instance) in the song order "by artist," that means i'd have to upload the new Themselves album and get to it naturally by listening to 14 letters worth of "by artist" music, that could take half a year...i used to read my books this way too...i still do with a couple provisions, if you're my friend/teacher you get bumped up in the order...if not, i put you in the back of the order...poetry has it's own order as does prose as does journals...for example, the next novel i'll be reading is Kazantzakis' The Last Temptation of Christ...i bought that book 6 years ago...you get the point...currently listening to Living Legends Stop & Retaliate...

...maybe this could also be a weekly series..."John's Sort-of OCD Symptoms"...don't ask me about my underwear or socks order...i'll get to it...

oh yeah, blog's are better than cell phones...i got a call from the folks (Sabrina and Mya) about a half an hour ago asking if i was down for drinks tonight! that's fun...

i'm gonna go watch the season finale of The X-Files Season 8...if i remember it correctly from when i watched it on the original airdate (that's right card carrying X-Files Fan club member) it was one of the biggest X-File tear jerkers of the entire 9 year series run...i don't know about you but i'm always down for some weeping before the bar...

wow! Rick London just phoned...we had a nice conversation about translation re his Darwish (Arabic) and my Agrafiotis (Greek)...

go Rick London!

...i just talked to my brother who got back from Brazil this morning...he's definitly the best person in the world...yuper, the best...

...note to folks in Boulder who wan't to get drinks but call me after 10 pm...you have to understand that if i'm not out by 8 i'm probably not going to go out...i'm probably in an Excedrin PM induced coma on the couch with a bowl of pistachio shells on the coffee table and The Lord of The Rings The Fellowship Of The Ring playing silently on the tube...so, hit your homie up sooner...like 6:30...

Fraser...

at work in the Williams Burroughs Gray Room (my office!) digitizing Kathleen Fraser's lecture "The Uncontainable" given at Naropa July 5, 1996...

"what does it mean to listen through existing written forms?"

about an hour ago finished digitizing a workshop led by Joanne Kyger (Fall 92')...an extenuation of her "Beat And Other Rebel Angels" lecture series...the final talk was all about Gary Snyder and in true Kyger fashion filled with amazing anecdotal factoids...i took a class with Kyger a couple Summer's back...Kyger's teaching method is pretty amazing..."workshop" is definitly a misnomer...we were looking at Lew Welch that day, Kyger pulls pages and pages of notes out of her tote bag...and without delay begins reading...reading verbatim from her notes, at once cogent and off the cuff, well researched and talky as only Joanne can be...the only workshoping that goes on in a Kyger class is the student's attempt at taking down/in everything she is saying...

...woke up this morning to snow...which immediately put me in a good mood...snow does that to me...you?

revelations...

funny how they work...i don't get it...like, a week ago when i checked the mail i found about 6 letter's addressed (by name) to my landlord...this isn't the first time it's happend...so, i'm thinking "i wonder why i keep getting mail for Erikur (landlord) in the mailbox..."...skip to tonight...i'm walking home from mailing some BOTH BOTH's, i have a bottle of Jameson in hand approaching my apartment, i just finished a smoke and am reaching into my jacket pocket to pull out my keys when it hits me...Erikur's mail is finding it's way into my mailbox because he used to live in my apartment (that's right, i've got the plush "building manager" apartment)...and the only reason i know this is because about a month 1/2 ago my garbage disposel was clogged and begining to flood the sink...i had to go to Erikur's apartment so he could call maintenance...when i invited Erikur into my apartment so he could take a look he remarked "i used to live here, this was my favorite (gesturing to the dining room) place to study..."...that's it, disposel fixed, never once thought about it again, and needlessly to say didn't connect any mail mishap dots...so, why O' why do the synapses snap into gear randomly tonight?! i wasn't thinking about it, it hasn't been bothering me, nothing NOTHING would have indicated that i'd connect the obvious (now, duh) clues...weird...the only thing i can think (ha!) is that somewhere, somehow my unconscious mind has been really hot and bothered by this seemingly puzzling situation...has been working at figureing it out for the last couple of months without my conscious mind being so much as privy...i love this, sort of freaks me out and makes me love being a homo homo sapian all at once...

...currently listening to Living Legends Angels With Dirty Faces...

Suzanne!!!

the lovely and amazing poet Suzanne Stein sent me Lil Kim's album Hardcore which i just recieved/ retrieved in the mail...this all stems from Christmas Eve...after Kevin K.'s birthday party me, Brandon and Suzanne headed back to the Mission to drink Pabst at Brandon's...and then after a few we got on the subject of sexy/ dirty female rap...and then Suzanne is all "John have you heard Lil Kim's Hardcore!?...and i'm all "noper" and she's all "alright, i'm gonna send it to you, it's the best!!!"

...and then she did, thanks Suzanne! (oh, and your copies (Dec/ Jan) of BOTH BOTH are in the mail)

another funny yahoo news article i just saw "face transplant patient is smoking again"

...currently listening to Lil Kim's Hardcore (is that the album title or Suzanne's burned cd title?...hmmm...)

BTW...

Koshkin came through with the Mac OS X...that's fun!

...currently listening to Living Legends Almost Famous...about to go eat lunch and read that interview...

float like a butterfly sting like an onion...

just got back from the grocery...gave myself deader arm walking hecka heavy goods home...DOUBLE FISTING IT!!!

1. candle (because i rely on matches to light my cigs and i've recently been out of matches and have been white trashly resorting to lighting my smokes with the oven burner...ghett...O!
2. toilet paper and mayo
3. super Summer sausages (because i have about 15 kinds of gourmet cheese in my fridge with nothing to eat them with)
4. two cans of Chunky Cambell's soup (as an incentive to keep me away from 7-11 after the bar on the weekends)
5. hamburger meat (i just got done preparing burgers for the freezer (my ritual is to cook a burger every Sunday, Greek style (sans bun) and watch Desperate Housewives)...my own burger concoction includes extra virgin olive oil, balsalmic vinegar, atomic bomb hot sauce, lemon juice and onions all mixed together into a lumpy spicy patti...))
6. one huge red onion (oh man, i can't tell you how hard i was tearing up slicing this onion...all the while dancing around to M.I.A. in my kitchen)
7. fuji apples and bannana's (someone once called me a fruitarian...cheers!)

...and speaking of meat, Silliman is too!!! all about Linh Dinh's erotic "meat" poems...
...and then Koshkin is putting together a "meat anthology"...that is, an anthology of poetry all about MEAT!!! the only poets that i know for sure are included are Lisa Jarnot and Logan Ryan Smith...that's fun!!!

here's one of my favorite Dinh poems:

Assholes

If I remember correctly, Bruce Chatwin
Declared the camel's to be the most elegant,
Over the cat's, horse's and human's.
I am no fan of the chicken's or the elephant's,
But the human asshole, like the human nose,
Hair, penis and breast, comes in such a variety.
Some are rimmmed pink, others are bruised purple.
Some are scraggly, bohemian, others well-trimmed.
Some are pert, saucy, even threatening.
Some are fankly shy, others coquettish.

...me again...and then two yahoo headlines that cracked me up/baffled me today...
"study: men enjoy watching mean people suffer" and "scientists discover new psuedo-scorpian species in caves"...at first glance i thought the latter read "scientists discover new psycho-scorpian species..." imagine coming across a "PSYCHO-scorpian in a dark cave"...roll a d20 and bust out your magic missle...

...currently listening to Leonard Cohen The Future...

i must i must i must increase my bust a move...

...just found out that Bimbo Gun is taking my poem "On Handling Spicer’s Filled But Unused Prescription of Neprobamate 400 mg While Kevin and Peter Look On At The Bancroft Library" for their upcoming issue...that's fun!

some notes toward the analytic lyric after reading Michael Palmer's essay "Counter-Poetics and Current Practice" published in Pavement 7 (1986):

1. silence/ conversation :political / linguistic/ grammatical
2. emergence, evolution regarding Palmer's diction/ the "accretive weight" of his language
3. silence as response
4. theater
5. a politics of politics
6. "incorporation of the immediate and the rupture of the unitary voice"
7. dispersal of the subject
8. operating at the margins (seems to be the major crux of an analytic lyric via Jabes, Celan, Vallejo, Holderlin, Hernandez, Hollander et al.)
9. critique of the discourse of power
10. structure of loss (margins)
11. the poem as an event both temporally and historically
12. prohibited content

after finishing the essay (originally presented as a "talk") i read through the endnotes finding a reference to a long interview with Palmer conducted by Benjamin Hollander and David Levi-Strauss published in ACTS 5...so i look on my bookshelf and lo and behold there she is, ACTS 5...the interview is 36 pages long! what a find! so, i'm going to read that today along with Palmer's Sun with the above notes in mind...i'll probably (hopefullly) end up with a mess of notes footnoting notes footnoting notes...a shimmery ouroboros of the analytic lyric...

...i'm not really sure why every morning i insist on smoking at least two cigs before my workout...super counter productive...like, mid-crunch i'm all "oh oh, where's the inhaler?"...for real...

my word!!!

my boy Goodword just recieved a 4 star rating for his debut album from URB magazine!!!

"As the title suggests, Goodword has a story to tell with his debut album. In fact, he has a whole bunch of stories, and they come to life through his attention to vivid detail, his smooth vocal delivery and a varied selection of beats from primary producer Steven Radison"

BOTH BOTH (January)...

okay! the January issue of BOTH BOTH is printed and ready to mail tommorow morning...look for it in your mailiboxes...i'm especially proud of this issue (an amazing cover plus a first time 31 issue limited edition (out of a 50 copy run) which the lucky one's will get))...huge thanks go to Michael Koshkin of Hot Whiskey Press for making the issue possible...BTW, if you'd like to purchase a 12 issue subscription send $25 checks made payable to John Sakkis 1900 Goss St. #109 Boulder CO 80302...

...watched Michael and Jen of Hot Whiskey get all "hot" this evening while formating BOTH BOTH when their new industrial strength paper cutter was deliverd by UPS...and then i watched Michael cut a phone book in half four times for fun!!!

and then the whole notion of detoxifying is out, seeing that Michael and I hit up the Catacombs for happy hour...oops!

...i think i'm going to do a submission run tommorow...haven't sent out work in a while...but mostly plan on reading all day tommorow...i super need to catch up...

last night's episode of Desperate Housewives sucked...but Felicity Huffman on 60 minutes rocked...60 min: "is being a mother the best experience of your life?" Sunday Sunday Sunday...

BARTER- one of the coolest things about doing BOTH BOTH is all the nice emails i've been getting from people i don't know, telling me they've heard good things about the series or seen it at a friend of a friends etc...and even nicer than that is it seems all these people are putting out interesting publications of their own which they offer to trade, which i love doing...

Steelers over the Colts today only because the latter is a much better football team and i want my Denver Broncos to play the lesser of the two for the AFC championship...and then onward Super Bowl...for all the Naropa people, let's have a Super Bowl party at someone's house...maybe mine? the Boulder Theater was just okay last year, i could never get completely comfortable with the idea of watching a football game in a movie theater surrounded by homeless people and bikers eating stale popcorn...

just 10 1/2 hours until Desperate Housewives!!!

still currently listening to John Coltrane Giant Steps...i know in an earlier post i declared my distaste for all things Jazzy...maybe it's the wind storm blowing outside, or the slight hangover, but i'm really enjoying Coltrane at the moment...

Denver Vs. New England...

"well it's Saturday night and i'm feeling alright" —Slug

just got back from Koshkin's...addendum, BOTH BOTH should be out by Tuesday (the cover is WAY hyphy if i may say so)...drank some wine that curiously smelled of beef jerky...but didn't taste that way...

...have been steadily weeping my way through The X-Files season 8...mad props go out to Jerimiah Bowen and Sabrina Calle for not interupting me once as i excitedly reiterated the plot points to the "This Is Not Happening" episode last night at the bar...mad props go to the door guy for letting me in five fingers...and to the bartender who i thought was Latina and or Pinay (but found out was white) buying me a drinks...

just heard back from Paul Hoover over at New American Writing...they're taking some poetry (from Mouf) for their upcoming 06' issue...hooray for me!!!...

...Denver is playing the Pats tonight...last i checked it was 3-0 Pats...boo!!!...i've grown to love the Broncos while living in CO...huge crushes on Jake Plumer and DJ Williams (a Concord boy!...the highschool he went to was right next to my highschool...private VS. Cali public/ his highschool used to refer to kids at my highschool as "ghetto rats"...needless to say HUGE difference...De La Salle (the best highschool football team in the country...espn made a documentary about them called "151"...they won 151 games in a row!!!) being a Catholic school and my highschool Ygnacio Valley High being a public school where stabbings (during school) and shootings (after school) and riots (sur vs. norte vs. woo woo's (vietnamese click) vs. vigilantes (pinoy click)) were not all that uncommon (don't get me wrong, YVHS wasn't the worst school in the world (you'd have to go to Oakland or Richmond for that), just typically bad for any of the California publics (elem/middle/highschool) that are located near the racially segregated (Hispanic) and economically denegrated neighborhood of Monument Blvd (South Concord))...

can't seem to get Norma Cole's Scout to work on my computer even though i have the proper OS software...boo...

had a nice conversation with Alan G. over the last couple of days about rap music (sort of ongoing for the last year or so though)...i LOVE Alan...i think he might be my poetry-blood-brother-in-crime-brother...his selected essays is forthcoming from Coffee House super soon...cop that shit!!!

...also, look for my review of Dizzee Rascal's Showtime forthcoming in the next issue of Steve Dickison/ David Meltzer's music rag Shuffle Boil...Brandon Brown also has a couple of reviews in the same issue...BB, what did you review again?

i was hanging out with my friend Ramsey Lewis (who i haven't seen in about 10 years)...for some reason we were googling his name in search of tattoo parlors in Concord...problematically the only thing the google searches reeped were jazz articles...

...suddenly at an airport sans Ramsey...i recognize Amy King kneeling over a suitcase at departing gate 44...i'm like "hey Amy King, what are you doing here?" and she's like "oh hey John, i'm a flight attendant for TWA..." and i'm like "oh yeah, i forgot..."

...learned the definition of "apologist" today after watching a TVN documentary on the new The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe movie...my favorite moment in the documentary was when they posited that GOD was fliping the script by adapting to the times to preach the message (as in, GOD'S down with using Hollywood as a tool to rap with the public about the "blood convenant")

the story of the Aborigines

nomadic in their habits
they indicate warfare

greenflies curling

swimming

Rose Bowl...

UT (Billy's alma) just beat USC in one of the best football games i've ever seen...all the hype was starting to weigh but holy crap what a match...Vinny Young for Mayor (7 rushing touchdowns himself in the last 2 games)...19 seconds left at the 7 yard line 4th down, USC up by 6 points, Vinny fakes the pass and rushes...TOUCHDOWN!!!...UT wins (pretty much though Reggie Bush gave UT a bit of a scare on the return play)...that was a lot of fun...so, i'll be back in Boulder tommorow evening...see the Naropians manana...

Hot Whiskey debut...

move if you can makeout her mouth sort of miming to B.B. happy birthday and handing him a bottle which is to illustrate the progress of civilization up to the present day that I was there when bought in greek four packets of Karelia’s virginia and brought back a big bottle fit for treason, stratagem, and spoils knocking the ball against the little house where I was born beginning to see that “two ugly make a pretty” moving upwards of a crooked village road not ten miles from the mud baths we read about as well as a foundry, coal-breaker, machine-shops, and light-house

blegh...
